- After a long day exploring Rome’s cobblestone streets, nothing beats collapsing into a chair in Trastevere and ordering a perfectly poured aperitivo at Good Pimms.
- Shake things up with a hands-on cocktail making class, get creative, learn the art of italiano mixology and the best part? You get to drink every single creation.
- Slow down, savour every bite and sip, and watch Roman life unfold around you, because true aperitivo is less about the drink and everything about living like a local.
Aperitivo Roma: My Love Affair with Rome’s Golden Hour
Honestly, we stumbled into aperitivo completely by accident.
That said, it became the best part of our entire trip.

I had no idea that one tired evening in Trastevere would turn into a beautiful nightly ritual.
I had no idea what aperitivo even meant before this trip.
Thankfully, Rome taught me everything, one delicious sip at a time.
Now back at home, we always have a bottle of Aperol in the fridge ready to go.

We based ourselves in Trastevere for two wonderful weeks.
As a result, we were perfectly placed to explore every bar on every cobbled lane. We made it our personal mission to sample them all.
What Is an Aperitivo? Your Guide to Pre-Dinner Drinks
So what is an aperitivo, exactly?
Simply put, it is Italy’s beloved pre-dinner ritual.
On top of that, it is far more than just a happy hour, it is a way of life.
The word comes from the Latin aperire, meaning “to open.”

The idea is to open your appetite before dinner.
Beyond that, it opens conversation, laughter, and connection too.
Aperitivo time Italy-style runs from around 7 PM to 9 PM.
Romans don’t eat dinner until very late.
This hour, building on that rhythm, allows you to slow down beautifully after a big day of sightseeing.
What to Expect: Aperitivo Hour in Italy (Cocktail Hour)
A drink is ordered, and complimentary snacks are brought to your table.
Even so, the generosity varies wildly from bar to bar.
Some places lay out an absolutely incredible spread.
Expect olives, focaccia, bruschetta, and local cheeses. Pecorino and prosciutto are commonly offered too.

Meanwhile, the drinks are generous and beautifully presented.
Prices typically range from €10 to €15 per drink.
You get excellent value when food is included.
For travellers over 45 who love authentic experiences, this is pure magic.
Planning – Proven Italian Travel Tips to Save Your Sanity
- Map it Out: Use a calendar and don’t count travel days as days in a location. Trust me, you’ll need that recovery Aperol Spritz at the end of the day.
- Respect the Siesta: From 1:00–4:30, things will close (not in Rome).
- Closed Sundays: Especially smaller shops and bakeries.
- Google Translate: Lifesaver. Also: learn “Ciao – hello” and “Grazie – Thank you.”
- eSIM Cards: Grab one from Airalo for easy data.
- Talk to Locals: They know all the best spots that aren’t on the ‘Gram.

Traditional Aperitivo Drinks and Snacks to Try
The Aperol aperitivo, that bright orange Spritz, is the star of the show.
A classic Negroni runs it a very close second.
Both are best enjoyed slowly in the evening warmth.

Vermouth with a twist of orange is wonderfully refreshing too.
A Campari Spritz, on the flip side, offers something slightly more bitter and sophisticated.
There is truly something for every palate.
Classic snacks include:
- Grissini (crispy breadsticks) with local dips
- Bruschetta topped with fresh tomato and basil
- Pecorino romano and aged prosciutto
- Marinated olives and roasted nuts
- Mini pizza slices and suppli (Roman rice balls)

Best Neighborhoods for Aperitivo in Rome
Trastevere is, without question, our favourite neighbourhood for aperitivo in Rome.
Monti and Campo de’ Fiori are brilliant alternatives.
Each area has its own distinct personality and vibe.

Trastevere feels like the real Rome.
Its winding medieval lanes are packed with locals, and it is far less touristy than areas closer to major landmarks.
We strongly recommend basing yourself here if possible.

Avoiding bars near the Trevi Fountain will save your wallet and your soul.
Trastevere, by contrast, delivers authenticity on every corner.
Top Local Aperitivo Spots in Trastevere
This is one of my niche superpowers – helping you understand realistic time needs for different travel styles.
Pimm’s Good
Pimm’s Good, oh, where do we even begin?
This was our absolute go-to spot.
To add to that, it sits just across from our apartment, which made life wonderfully dangerous.
A drink plus a mountain of food costs around €12.
You leave feeling incredibly satisfied, for us, most nights this was dinner.

The staff are warm, funny, and wonderfully welcoming to all ages.
Here are our top picks for aperitivo in Trastevere:
However, you’ll still be in “seeing everything” mode rather than “living here” mode.
Moreover, you might feel rushed trying to fit in all the incredible beaches and experiences.
Freni e Frizioni — Via del Politeama, 4
This former mechanic shop is now Trastevere’s most famous bar.
It gets very crowded, so arrive by 7 PM for a spot.
The buffet is legendary and deeply generous.
Expect pasta, cured meats, cheese, and hot dishes all included.

A Spritz costs around €8–10, outstanding value in the heart of Rome.
Enoteca Ferrara — Piazza Trilussa
A more refined experience is offered here, near the beautiful Piazza Trilussa.
Wine lovers are especially well catered for, and the curated Italian selection is absolutely superb.

Prices run slightly higher at around €12–15.
That said, the quality is consistently exceptional, perfect for a special evening out.
L’Antidoto — Vicolo del Bologna, 19
Natural wine is celebrated enthusiastically at this intimate little bar.
Locals love it fiercely and visit regularly.
The atmosphere, beyond that, is wonderfully cosy and unhurried.

Expect around €10–12 for a glass with snacks, excellent value.
Not to mention, the knowledgeable staff love sharing their passion for natural wines.
Latteria della Scala — Vicolo della Scala, 1
Rustic, charming, and gloriously unpretentious, this is old Trastevere at its best.
The casual vibe is perfect for relaxed evenings, and it is a firm favourite with neighbourhood regulars.

Drinks are priced at around €8–10, making it one of the most affordable spots in the area.
The snacks are simple but beautifully fresh.
How to Do Aperitivo Like a Roman
First, leave your hotel no earlier than 7 PM. Arriving too early looks very tourist-like, Romans operate on their own gloriously unhurried timetable.
Don’t arrive too late either, as the best snacks disappear fast.
With that in mind, 7:15 PM is the sweet spot.
Dress smartly but comfortably for maximum authenticity.
Be prepared to stand, many popular spots are standing-room only.

All the same, this makes the whole experience feel wonderfully lively and social.
Stay for one or two drinks, then move on to dinner.
Aperitivo is a beginning, not a replacement for the evening meal.
Romans eat dinner from 8:30 PM onwards.
Explore Piazza San Cosimato for a more local crowd.
The market square attracts neighbourhood families and friends, it feels delightfully authentic and unhurried.
Most importantly, finish the night with a stroll through the streets and if you still have room, a gelato.
Suggested Tours: Explore Rome the Right Way
If you want to discover Trastevere properly, consider booking a Trastevere food and wine walking tour via GetYourGuide.
Local guides share stories no guidebook mentions — and you’ll discover hidden bars that don’t appear on any map.
On top of that, a Rome aperitivo cocktail masterclass from GetYourGuide is a wonderful way to learn the craft.

You can recreate the magic of Aperitivo Roma back home, and it makes a brilliant gift for a travelling companion.
These experiences add wonderful depth to your Rome itinerary.
Beyond that, they connect you with local culture far beyond what a typical tourist sees. We cannot recommend them highly enough.
Final Thoughts: Aperitivo Italy Will Change You
Aperitivo Roma is honestly one of life’s great pleasures, affordable, sociable, and deeply Italian.
It slows everything down in the most beautiful way.
For us more mature travellers, cocktail hour Italy offers something truly special.

No frantic rush, no loud music, no pressure whatsoever (not that I don’t like a good boogie).
It is the perfect way to end a full day of exploration.
Trastevere will steal your heart.
Its bars will steal a few evenings too.
Even so, you will leave feeling richer for every single one of those stolen hours.
So pull up a chair, or find a spot to stand, and order that Spritz.
Let aperitivo Rome work its magic. I promise you will never think of happy hour the same way again.
