The Schafbergbahn has been chugging up steep slopes since 1893. Furthermore, it remains one of Austria’s steepest cogwheel railways still operating today.

We found ourselves transported back in time aboard the restored steam locomotives. Indeed, these authentic engines operate daily during summer months, puffing nostalgic clouds into alpine air.

Getting There: Your Journey from Salzburg

We explored several options for day trips from Salzburg to reach the railway. Fortunately, multiple transportation methods make this excursion accessible.

Driving takes roughly one hour via scenic country roads. The easiest way is to use your satnav or phone with google maps.

Alternatively, the public buses connect Salzburg to St. Wolfgang. We took bus 150 (just outside Hotel Hofwirt) to Gilgen and then the boat to Wolfgang. Bonus, you also get a ride on the lake. Get off the ferry at the Schafberg end and walk accross the road to Schafberg Bahn (station).

It will cost about 10 Euros each way and the buses run every half hour and it takes about 50 mins – 1 hour.

The railway ticket costs approximately €61 for adults (round trip). Or if you’re feeling energetic, you can just go one way for €43 and walk back down.

Peak season runs from May through September. During these months, advance booking becomes essential for securing preferred dates.

What to Expect During Your Schafberg Railway Journey

The ascent takes approximately 35 minutes aboard vintage carriages. Throughout the climb, we watched as the views got more and more amazing.

Pine forests gradually give way to alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Then, rocky peaks emerge as you approach the summit station.

We spent roughly two hours at the peak before descending. However, some visitors choose to hike down, which takes about three hours.

Essential Tips for Your Visit to the Schafberg Cog Railway
