A Saxony Christmas: Snow, Markets & Magic in Germany’s Hidden Gem Baroque Gem on the Elbe
If you’re dreaming of a fairytale European Christmas, complete with twinkling lights, snow covered rooftops, and festive cheer without the crazy crowds, Saxony is your secret weapon. This underrated corner of eastern Germany delivered us an unforgettable holiday. Here’s our exclusive look at what made our Christmas in Saxony so epic and why it deserves a top spot on your festive bucket list.

Christmas in Saxony feels like stepping into a snow globe, think glowing Christmas markets, the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine in the air, and quiet villages blanketed in snow. We wandered through the festive stalls in Leipzig and Dresden, sledded down snowy hills in the mountains, and spent Christmas Day in a cosy little village near the Czech border. With fewer crowds than Bavaria and just as much charm, Saxony gave us everything we dreamed of: magical moments, delicious traditions, and a true taste of winter wonder.
Whether you’re stopping for a few days or staying a few weeks, Dresden makes an ideal base to explore Saxony’s castles, hiking trails, and day trips to Prague or Leipzig
What we look for in Accommodation
When we travel, we like to pack light so finding an apartment with a washing machine is a must. We also look for air conditioning in summer, which can be a real lifesaver, especially after a day of sightseeing. And we prefer being close to public transport or the city centre it makes exploring so much easier, especially without a hire car.

If you’re staying for more than a few days, an apartment with a kitchen means you can enjoy local food markets and cook some of your own meals, saving money and enjoying a slower pace.
Location Is Everything
Think about proximity to U-Bahn or S-Bahn stations, grocery stores, and must see sights. Dresden’s walkable, but you’ll thank yourself later for being near transport, especially in winter.
Know What You Need
A snug room might be fine for a weekend. But if you’re staying longer, consider an apartment with a kitchen, washing machine, air conditioning in summer and a bit of space to relax. Cooking at home can save money and give you a break from eating out.
Don’t Forget the Wi-Fi
Fast, reliable internet is essential for all travellers or just uploading your Dresden graffiti selfies to flickr at the end of the day.
Match Your Rental to Your Travel Style
Staying in one area for a week or more? Look for places that feel homey. Moving around more often? Prioritise easy check-in and smaller, more affordable stays.
Sensational Start in Leipzig: Lights, Music & Markets
We arrived in Leipzig by train about a week before Christmas, and WOW the city was bursting with festive magic. Its Christmas market is one of Germany’s oldest, packed with charming wooden stalls, spicy Glühwein, handmade gifts, and carol singers echoing through the market square.
Leipzig is a vibrant student city with serious cultural clout. Bach lived here, and you can still feel the music in the air.

Game-Changer Road Trip: Frauenstein & Beyond
After soaking up city vibes, we rented a car and drove south into the Ore Mountains. Public transport gets sparse outside the city, so a car is a must-have for exploring Saxony’s hidden gems.
Our Christmas base was the tiny village of Frauenstein, tucked near the Czech Republic border. We stayed on the top floor of the old train station, converted into a cosy holiday home with creaky wood floors, snowy views, and loads of charm. Coming from a hot country, snow is a rarity to us so the snow on Christmas Eve brought lots of cheer. So, was the fox creeping through the garden on Christmas morning.

Every day, we hit the road to discover a new town, snowy forest, or mountain peak. The freedom was unbeatable and gave us an insider experience of Saxony’s quieter side.
Place to stay if you want to get out of the cities:
- Bahnhof Frauenstein SCHLOSSBLICK – Super apartment with 3 bedrooms. Stylish and modern furnishings with great accessories that remind you of a train station.
- Ferienwohnung Schlosswächter am Schloss Colditz – You couldn’t get a better location. The apartment was fresh and airy and had great views all round. The restaurant down stairs was very good.
- Lauschablick FeWo Thüringen– The apartment was very clean, very tidy and functional. There were delicious desserts for us in the apartment, as well as basic needs such as tea, coffee, salt and sugar. The kitchen was fully equipped.
3. White Christmas in Oberwiesenthal: Snow, Sleds & Stories
On Christmas Day, we headed to Oberwiesenthal Germany’s highest town and a total winter wonderland. Think snowy streets, cheerful tobogganing, ski lifts, and cosy huts serving steaming hot cocoa.

Place to stay close to ski resorts:
- Bellevue Keilberg by Mountain ways – the view is amazing. The accommodation is very nice, well-equipped
- Boutique apartment Heidi with mountain view – Amazing views from the windows, perfect parking. Clean, fresh charming interior. Walking distance from the ski lifts.
- Hillside No. 18 – Very modern, nice decor, very clean, good facilities. The location perfect.
Underground Adventure: Silver Mine Secrets in Annaberg-Buchholz
Want a truly unique day out? Head to the Markus-Röhling-Stolln silver mine. It was a total breakthrough highlight. You dress in full mining gear, hop aboard a tiny train that dives into the mountain, and explore real underground tunnels with original machines.
It’s fun, educational, and just a little spooky. Great for kids, adults, and curious minds alike. A must do for history lovers and anyone who wants to experience Saxony’s mining past first hand.
Wandering through the charming town of Annaberg-Buchholz feels like stepping into a storybook. Nestled in the heart of Saxony’s Ore Mountains, this historic mining town is full of cobbled streets, colourful half-timbered houses, and the impressive St. Anne’s Church, one of the most beautiful late-Gothic churches in Germany. The town is known for its deep mining heritage and traditional woodcraft, especially at Christmastime when twinkling lights and handmade decorations turn it into a festive wonderland. With cosy cafés, artisan shops, and sweeping views of the surrounding hills, Annaberg-Buchholz is a delightful spot for a relaxed and scenic stroll.

Epic Views in Saxony Switzerland National Park
Need fresh air and jaw-dropping views? Saxon Switzerland National Park is a game changer. We hiked along sandstone cliffs, crossed the famous Bastei Bridge, and soaked in sweeping views of the Elbe River.
This area is perfect for slow travel and outdoor adventure, with trails for all fitness levels. It’s no wonder 18th-century painters fell in love with it.

Discovering Dresden: Baroque Beauty & More Markets
Dresden glows with elegance. Baroque architecture, riverside strolls, and one of the best Christmas markets in the country. We loved wandering the Altstadt (Old Town), popping into museums, and warming up with coffee and cake.

Don’t miss: The Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace, and a wander along the Elbe. Dresden was destroyed in WWII but has been beautifully rebuilt.
